A public-private collaboration resulted in this significant improvement in
the appearance of a portion of a city block in Hagerman. Overhead utilities
were buried and a view of the bluffs on the west side of the river created.
The project became feasible when the local grocery store owner agreed to
purchase the buildings (which had been condemned and deemed unsafe and
beyond repair) shown in the "before" photo and donate them to the City.
The City in turn obtained grant funding to demolish the buildings and
construct a publicly owned parking lot. The market owner also agreed to
build a new, larger store on adjoining land and create new jobs. The
project was completed in August 2003 as shown in the "after" photo. |
