IDEA is working to facilitate development of a food marketing and distribution cooperative that will educate and bring together producers and consumers in a mutually beneficial relationship. This project is consistent with our purpose as an Idaho Charitable Corporation because it can have far-reaching economic, health and social benefits for our communities and our region. South-Central Idaho and the Hagerman Valley have long traditions of raising high quality foods. In recent years small producers have had difficulty competing against highly efficient, industrial-sized producers, and many small farms have disappeared and continue to disappear.

Given the complex nature and high energy demands of our nation’s food production and distribution system, recent concerns about food safety, and a growing desire on the part of consumers to have access to high-quality, natural and locally-produced foods the time appears to us to be right to promote local food crop production, educate consumers about the health benefits of fresh local foods, educate producers about growing and marketing their products and facilitate establishment of a local food marketing and distribution cooperative.
